I have been working at Langan Engineering and Environmental Services full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Very well organized and a lot of room to grow. The office is mostly a younger group of engineers/scientists and is an exciting place to work. Everyone is well liked by their co-workers. The demand can be high at times, but it is well understood and appreciated by the managers. Everyone has an opportunity to meet clients, bring in work, and involve themselves in business development and various professional and non-professional organizations. The management is very easy to approach and talk to and is very enjoyable to work for. Management allows its staff a large amount of responsibility with excellent guidance, but never overwhelms you with more than what you can/should be able to handle. The Pittsburgh offic has a small office appeal, with the ability of a major nationally recognized company with significant resorces. This is an excellent place to work and would suggest it to anyone.

Cons

The "Cons" are consistent with any company an individual may work for, that is to say nothing specific that you wouldn’t have from any other engineering firm.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management is doing a fantastic job with its employees. As long as they continue to compensate well and allow for such significant professional growth, there will be no problems in continuing the progression of this office.

    Pros

at this company the staff get to work on cool, complex, and high profile projects. great place to accelerate your career. the managers involve you in the direct discussions with the client, so you get max exposure and learn the business. they don't pigeonhole you into doing mundane tasks with no background on big picture.

    Cons

having a direct line to clients means full impact of clients demands for quick turnaround and sometimes short notice. this can lead to spikes of long hours. but the managers let you balance it out the next week after deadlines pass ("comp time". leave early, personal day, etc).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

increase communication to younger staff, to give feedback and listen to feedback from younger staff.

    Pros

    Pros --
There are plenty of opportunities to learn at Langan and you have an opportunity to interact with some very sharp colleagues. Langan also seems stays on the cutting edge when it comes to technology.

    Cons

Cons -- Langan has a culture of putting profits above all else and not adhering to their core values of integrity and teamwork. Due to the management structure, with each "Stockholder Group" being its own profit-center, the culture can be described as "Every Man for himself". Senior Management encourages this shark-like behavior by "putting some bait and the water and seeing who gets it." This discourages teamwork and sharing.

There is absolutely no work-life balance at Langan, at least at the levels below Stockholder. Employees are expected to complete nearly all non-billable work on their own time (including training, proposal writing, networking events, and administrative tasks such as timesheets, and any over-budget items), which ends up equating to 65-70 hour work weeks as de rigueur.

Langan has shown that that they are not loyal to their staff -- having 3 or 4 rounds of large layoffs in the last 5 years. However, Senior Management continued to be employed. This has led to an inverted pyramid structure, severely limiting growth opportunities for staff and middle-management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is obvious that Management has seen the negative reviews on Glassdoor and has undertaken an initiative to write glowing reviews and they have instructed current employees to do the same (note many of the positive reviews are all from a one-week window).

My advice to Management, is to put yourself in the shoes of your staff, and treat them they way you would want to be treated.
