I have been working at Level 3 Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Level 3 offers a very solid tuition assistance program. There are opportunities for advancement in different departments as well as around the nation. The overall culture is that of a 'can do' attitude. The expansion over the last 7 years is an indicator that the leadership is striving to keep forward momentum.

Cons

Level 3 is bound by the economic environment as are many American companies. Level 3 continues to strive to avoid the unfortunate decisions that must be made when the economy slows.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, this is a good company to work for. It suffers from the same issues that most companies dependent on the economy suffer from. Level 3 still remains a place where individuals can grow and develop while contributing in the growth of the company.

I have been working at Level 3 Communications full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Colleagues, many of them, are good people to work with
    - You get a shift differential if you work odd hour shifts

    Cons

    - Company interests always far outweigh the interests of the employees
    - HR, executives, and higher management have a company first employee last attitude
    - You are asked on a semi-regular basis to justify your value, work and position with the company
    - Problems and outages become a witch hunt and a mandatory scapegoat must be found
    - Work and production is routinely monitored in a micro-managed environment
    - The culture and environment there is deplorable and has the feel of a concentration camp
    - Good managers who look out for the best interests of their subordinates are let go or forced to leave
    - Speaking up and reporting bad policies and/or abuses can and will be detrimental to the one doing the reporting
    - They are NOT a family friendly employer
    - They routinely pay on the very lowest end of industry average

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Seriously adjust your culture and make 100% of the employees feel valued in word and deed (and truly mean and prove it)
    - Look for reasonable solutions to preventing problems as opposed to hanging someone after they occur
    - Truly care for and have better consideration for employees that work in stressful environments and/or under high stress conditions
    - Discourage micro-management attitudes and policies
    - Be more family friendly and respect that employees care for their families first, not the company
    - Respect that employees have a life outside and beyond the company
