I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional

Pros

Diverse opportunities throughout the organization - from IT, to sales, marketing, data mining, project and product management, customer service and support - there's a lot to do here.

Cons

Bachelor Degree might get you into sales or Customer Support, but anything more than that the premium is on an advanced degree - MBA, and especially, JD. If you only have a BA or BS, you're only going to go so far.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are plenty of capable folks in your employment who don't have a JD or MBA, but have plenty of experience with the company. Management can do a better job of giving these people opportunities throughout the organization.

    Pros

Now a days it's hard to find a job, so the best reason is it's a job. They have good benefits.

    Cons

I have never worked anywhere were the moral is so bad, they have luncheon, or gathering to bring the moral up. A lunch or gathering is not solving the problem with the way they run the business. Hiring from the outside so they think outside the box is not solving anything, it's making things more difficult. the old saying don't fix it.... if it's ain't broken, well management broke it and can't fix it. very said.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have no advice for management because it's a waste of time. i've tried many of times to help save money for the company.

Incredible local people and dedication; HORRIBLE remote senior management

    Pros

    Extremely knowledgeable people
    Very passionate, committed coworkers
    Decent benefits
Decent work/life balance, though its up to you to monitor it - they'll take all they can get
Local teams of business-side and development-side people work well together and respect each other

    Cons

The local business and development organization is very competant, professional, and gets a lot done. In fact, the Litigation Solutions division is one of the few LexisNexis groups that has met it's sales goals and continued to grow. The big problem is when the corporate office decides to treat this division as just another regional office and makes cookie cutter decisions that have serious negative impacts. In addition, this division is a developer of PC and web-based software applications for the litigation discovery process, and senior management has no idea how to develop software applications. They are "leaders" who have a content background, not a software development background. As a result, they try to make changes to a system that works well, in order to make it fit in with the other divisions, because it's more work to have different processes and practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the local management teams make the decisions on how to succeed - if they deliver, why not give them the authority to decide how to operate?
Take a serious look at the trade-offs being made in regards to integrity and valuing your people, in the name of doing whatever it takes to get products out.
