Legal was a good place to work, however the Risk/Government lacked class solid organizational leadership.

Pros

Lexis has a strong brand in the market and was once a very employee friendly place to work. Benefits and compensation are above average and continuous learning is valued.

Cons

Lexis restructures far too often, creating client and employee churn. They create impossible goals, split accounts and move revenue to appeal to Wall Street, but have missed the mark for the past 5 years. The Legal division is a class organization, but the Risk/ Government group is very unsophisticated with egomaniac leaders. There is very little consideration given to work & family balance and they drive workers like used car salesmen. The overall reputation has taken hits and sales are suffering.

Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your customers and their needs over how many more ways you can restructure the business.

    Pros

The pay and benefits are decent and the work/life balance is also good. If you have experience or interest in the legal industry and technology, it's a company to consider. i also worked with many great people. Senior management appears to be moving in the right direction but may need to "pull the band-aid off" if they want to avoid losing more talent and getting too far behind competitors.

    Cons

The company has a very ingrained hierarchy mindset that results in entitlements for managers and non-managers being treated like incompetent children. If you want to be given respect and given the ability to take action as a professional think twice about LexisNexis. This also results in extremely orchestrated and strict roles and separation of duties that leaves people in very narrow roles with limited ability to effect anything since actions must navigate a large and complicated heir achy and bureaucracy. As a result, there was virtually zero opportunity to grow or move up in the company and pay was also stagnant.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate middle management and some higher management and bring the lower class into the fold and treat your people like talented experts at their role. I worked with a lot of extremely talented and experienced people that could only contribute about 20% of what they were capable of. Unleash the other 75% and their is no limit to what LexisNexis is capable of.

    Pros

Diverse opportunities throughout the organization - from IT, to sales, marketing, data mining, project and product management, customer service and support - there's a lot to do here.

    Cons

Bachelor Degree might get you into sales or Customer Support, but anything more than that the premium is on an advanced degree - MBA, and especially, JD. If you only have a BA or BS, you're only going to go so far.

    Advice to Management

There are plenty of capable folks in your employment who don't have a JD or MBA, but have plenty of experience with the company. Management can do a better job of giving these people opportunities throughout the organization.
