I worked at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - excellent benefits including 401k matching and vacation time you can never use
    - many career opportunities if you are in the right cities or willing to move
    - generally good people trying to do their best
    - if you don't like the leadership or organizational structure, just wait -- it will change soon enough
    - starting pay can be good but negotiate your best salary on your way in the door, because true promotions and significant raises thereafter are few and far between

    Cons

    - core value is "Valuing our People" yet countless rounds of layoffs across the organization continually impact morale and workload
    - core value is "Customer Focus" yet clients are repeatedly affected by short-sighted decisions and lack of investment in long-term solutions
    - offsites, summits and contests spur unending new initiatives, but rarely is anything executed to completion
    - Eventually high perfomers have to lower their standards or leave; very frustrating working alongside desensitized and/or extremely overextended teammates who can't give you the courtesy of returning calls or answering email
    - not unusual to be "laterally moved" to a higher responsibility position with more demanding goals, yet without any change in title or pay ... great for professional growth but not your career path
    - distinct redheaded stepchild syndrome if you are not in the core legal research business unit

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Message to concerned employees from HR and Sr. Leaders is often, "Just be thankful you have a job," or "Just keep your nose to the grindstone" -- as the economy improves and people have more options available to them, prepare for the exodus. When there is no choice but to eliminate positions, rather than make decisions in a vacuum several levels removed from the frontlines, bring in some trusted mid-level managers and/or rank-and-file workers to shed light on the potential ramifications of your decisions. Seeing who stays and who goes after the fact can be puzzling to the "survivors" who are closer to their colleagues' varying performance and contribution levels, as is witnessing executive surprise at presumably unforeseen repercussions to client relationships, quality, and business continuity.
