Great company. Lost its ability to innovate and keep up with the competition.

Pros

Great employees. Phenomenal work-life balance. Still value customer service and providing a good customer experience.

Cons

Lost their ability to innovate and keep up with the competition. Cultural changes and inability to successfully consolidate many of their acquisitions proved frustrating.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are in line with industry average. There are frequent fun company sponsored events.

    Cons

People are overworked and there is a lack of trust in executive leadership and management. Constant turn over among executive and management positions. The organization structure also includes a large number of these positions relative to the number of employees. There's almost an equal amount of time spent communicating and reviewing with different layers of management as there is on actual deliverables. Low morale and high burnout.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees like they're human, are valuable, and have lives outside of work. Set reasonable expectations and schedules based on resources. Also, spend more resources on technical, hands-on skills and decrease the management layers!!

    Pros

good location, good low-level staff, really great content

    Cons

poor support of staff, no training budget or time, lousy middle management parachuted in from elsewhere and both incompetent and unpleasant

    Advice to Management

promote from within, empower employees, institute 360 review process, be sure managers have some experience of both business and content, and aren't just hired because they have an MBA or have worked in management in some unrelated function within the company. make budget for book and periodical purchase, association membership, and website subscriptions so employees can have some access to training and stay current. makes books published by lexis accessible to staff---most staff have no way to see their own products, or to get to know other products within the company---this makes cross-department collaboration and innovation impossible. stop relying on temps and outsourcers---live by your own best practice and mission statement---hire good people locally, train them and support them and reward them and build employee loyalty. management is so awful, blind, and incompetent; have ZERO idea of how to build a business, innovate, support staff, empower staff to promote improvement and collaboration etc. This company will go down down down---more layoffs until there is nothing left, then elsevier will sell off its assets for scrap. what a waste. stop hiring management consultants. your own people know better what needs to be done, just your incompetent and petty middle management prevents any improvement. you are creating a wasteland.
