Liberty Mutual is a solid employer, but check out the medical benefits closely if that's important to you.

Pros

The company is very solid and upper management does operate with integrity. Liberty pays well. I believe that Ted Kelly does operate with integrity. The experience that you gain from working at a company with the reputation that Liberty Mutual has is invaluable. Many of the jobs do offer flexibility.

Cons

The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is always doing. Liberty has been going through quite a bit of restructuring in the commercial markets since the Safeco acquistion took place. The medical insurance program has been cut back significantly. It's a deductible program that requires you to pay a tiered deductible based on your earnings. The highest deductible is $2250 per family. After the deductible is met, employees have 90% coverage for primary care physicians in network, and 80% coverage for specialists. Emergency room visits are also charged an additional fee that becomes a penalty. Out of pocket expense add up.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Liberty Mutual's management seems very reactive and they don't communicate very well with the field. My advice to the upper management team would be to focus more on long range planning and evaluate the decisions they make against long range goals. New upper management in a business unit seems to always mean change. Communicate clearly and responsibly with the field and in a timely manner.

    Pros

Great Products and great compensation. Overall this is a good company to work for. Very family friendly. Lots of opportuinity for growth and advancment if you live in a major metro area or are willing to move. Production is king. the more you produce the better you are treated.

    Cons

Liberty Mutual has a very ridigd radical command structure. many layers of management. They were always good about recognizing good performance. but you were either in the "spotlight" or "on the radar" not much inbetween. In terms of production the difference between Hero and Zero was about one policy a week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to grow the field sales force. And look out for Sales Reps that cheat on applications.

Not a bad place to work short of a questionable management team

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance

    Pros

Good Work/Life balance with flexible hours and encouraged time off. Managers are generally accepting of an individuals schedule that best suites their individual work needs. Vacation time is ample and is almost always approved when requested off. Employees are able to come in early and leave early, or come in late and leave late - whichever works best for their particular lifestyle. The salary appears to be comprable to other near by companies in the area and the benefits are also quite sufficient. As far as places to work in the area, Liberty Mutual is probably one of the more preferred companies one could work for.

    Cons

Senior Management, and management in general appears more interested in the day to day bureaucracy and power struggles than they are about actually getting things done. It must concern an individual from the outside looking in, or from the inside looking out for that matter, that the company is just nailing down its internet site now - in 2008. A little late to the party... Very conservative in decision making and the acceptance of new ideas and thoughts. Lack of understanding from management regarding what employees do and the nature of work being accomplished on the ground. A definitely disconect between management and employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and understand what it is they actually do prior to formulating opinions and, more specifically, deadlines.
