I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Fortune 100 Company, good 401K matching, great colleagues. 4 month training programs allows you to learn products and company.

Cons

Limited opportunities to advance unless you are in Boston. Management is unsupportive and self-serving. You pay for all license and marketing expenses upfront and are reimbursed 3-4 weeks later.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employee surveys should be a tool used to improve the workplace year after year. Please listen to the feedback from your employees. It is invaluable. Also, please remember that your reputation is built on your customers as well as you EMPLOYEES. My experience at this company was overall negative because of the way I was treated.

    I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Benes are good. Seattle location is great. Corporately this company tries to do the right thing all around. Large technically complex environment. Company paid community service day. Company does make an effort to address performance issues.

    Cons

    Managers don't understand the role that competance, training, or support play in getting the job done. Managers have trouble making decisions as though this is their first job out of school. Managers spend an enormous amount of time in meetings. Employees are VERY stressed out with distraction and redirection. Indianapolis is where the action and opportunity are. There is difficulty managing work across time zones. Pay is mediocre. Not a "fun" environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to take a more focused attitude of "let's get it done".

    I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Pretty good benefits package;
    Lots of opportunities to move to other SBU's and departments;
    Downtown location

    Cons

    Some ill-qualified middle & senior managers who have been promoted through tenure with company;
    My top managers officially write down development goals but don't actually have time or care to develop me;
    Employees who aggressively brown-nose and talk up their own contributions get ahead;
    Dissatisfied scores/comments on the Employee Opinion Survey isn't followed with real action for improvement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Provide clear success indicators for promotion and adhere to them across all departments; Become leaner because there are many middle managers who have risen through tenure but have poor decision-making and management skills; Recruiters need to be given higher performance markers because many good internal candidates are passed up due to their lack of response to these interested employees.
