Poor Communication and Upper Management who are not looking to help cultivate new leaders.

I worked at Lids full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Big company that is attempting to grow in new markets. Namely they have reached into the sporting world and now hold contracts with major sport brands as their official merchandiser.

    Cons

    Slow to react to change.
Unwilling to change their management and operations style to fit the new direction of the company.
Stuck trying to make everything fit like its a hat store in a mall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a reason everyone is jumping ship and it is because you make your store management feel irrelevant and keep forcing your 2 dimensional ideas down the pipe.

I have been working at Lids

    Pros

It is a wonderful environment to interact with the general public in an exciting setting. They have a diverse range of products/services. It's premise is to have fun and sell hats.

    Cons

You are not fairly compensated for your work. They preach that they like to promote from within, but after being ranked as the #! overall rated employee for two years running as well as taking on additional training of management while posessing a bachelor's degree I did not recieve a single raise and in fact was misled to believe that I would be compensated for the additional training I provided for their recruits. They would rather replace a great employee than increase their pay. Bottom line, the company is growing but the employees are viewed as expendable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lids needs to recognize it's talent at the store level and compensate them fairly. The system now creates unmotivated, non-comissioned employees that can achieve for long periods of time while being paid next to nothing without so much as giving them a bump in pay or responsibilities. The potental for tapping into the tremendous sales opportunities that slip away from them daily is enormous if they learn that better compensated employees that see their peers promoted to upper management are much more sales focused. Right now the majority of the employees with not execute or even initiate their proposed customer service techniques and don't even bother to know of their personal daily sales goals. It is a growing company that does very well but it has the potental to do exponentially better.
