Pros

Great products and reputation with a few exceptions in genetic analysis, co workers are high-caliber, even keel work environment and not a lot of overtime expected. Good benefits and culture.

Cons

Senior management are MBA types that focus almost exclusively on quarterly numbers and headline grabbing technologies. More fundamental drivers of performance such as employee development or leadership/alignment for the organization on goals & priorities are missing. As a result the company is very bureaucratic and employees spend a lot of their time spinning their wheels trying to clarify priorities and define processes. Performance lags where it should be due to excess cost on unproductive people resources due to disarray in alignment and process. Management is out of touch with what lower level managers are actually doing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management, especially finance, need to stop trying to manage the quarterly numbers obsessively and start working on longer term, strategic ways to capture value. Employees need a clear message and better organizational efficiency (less bureacracy, more focus on results and rewards for performance).

I have been working at Life Technologies

    Pros

Offers products and services that make positive impacts to society

    Cons

Sub-par senior management that cannot stay focused. Dabbles too much time and effort into many things. Cannot prioritize quickly and decisively. Employees are left to spin their wheels and work long hours without adding much value. Management doesn't utilize employees effectively.

Not a lot of structured processes. High degree of bureaucracy. Roles and responsibilities are not clear. Management too focused on near-term results to fix organizational issues, even though having everyone be on the same page would tremendously benefit efficiency in the long-run

Management blames employees for company's poor performance, rather than its own inability to manage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to basics...as in management 101. See how far our company is off track from established best practices held by well-run companies.

Executives should all share the same philosophy on how to take the company to the next level. As long as executive tension continues to exist, our company and the employees will always be in disarray. Don't leave the company in a schizophrenic state. Employees are getting mixed messages. If the leaders can't align on what's right for the company, how do you expect employees to move in one direction?

If our company is to achieve higher ROIC, then start being focused. There is a reason why our stock performance has lagged industry peers over the years. If management truly "manages the company and not the stock", then start acting like it. Stop worrying so much about the quarter to quarter to appease short-sighted investors. Have a focused and deliberate strategic plan. Stop making so many changes. Be decisive and stick with it.

    Pros

Some good products, through acquiring small companies. Cute, "techy" additions to portfolio makes the company interesting to stock holders and investors.

    Cons

State of business is not sustainable and would take 18-20 mos to turnaround, if they started today, with right leadership. Huge political divide through big acquisition, still not resolved. Steep benefits payments, mediocre coverage (though thats the current market). Work/Life balance can be better... Usual 65hr weeks, not too much bother when you take off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seems the CEO is good businessman, though acutely unaware to the degree of the issues in the company and with customers.
