    Current Employee - Systems Engineer in Carlsbad, CA

    I have been working at Life Technologies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    * Innovative and interesting technologies
    * Opportunities to expand your skillsets quickly
    * Able to work cross-functionally
    * Able to draw talent right out of school pretty easily

    Cons

    * Office politics is so amazing, it gives me a headache
    * Some sites are more prone to be uncooperative than others, and it really shows
    * Engineering is not respected at all
    * Business has no idea how to manage projects, or even promote forward thinking; constant M&A slowly bleeds the company out, and is done even against technical input
    * HR obviously delusional about what the company really does, and makes us seem like we're growing when that's obviously not true
    * Benefits have got to be a joke...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Respect your employees more, and trust their technical input
    * Stop messing with financial books and lying to employees how the company really is
    * Please re-think priorities; in order to sell reagents, you need instruments. Don't just straight up cut engineering because you underfunded them to begin with.
