I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great people to work with on the ground level.

Many opportunities to collaborate with other very talented scientists across the company.

Many great opportunities to work with and get exposed to other job functions (marketing, product development, operations, quality).

Cons

Upper management continues to strip away more benefits from its employees every year.

Upper management also lacks the patience and tenacity that are required to carry new projects through thecommercialization process, causing scientists to develop relatively simple products that do not challenge the mind.

R&D scientists spend too much time on the "D" and not the "R" .

R&D scientists are also continually distracted from their primary job function of conducting experiments in order to support non-scientist related tasks related to marketing and product development. Don't get me wrong, the distraction is nice but it is too often and at the end of the day, upper management only cares about things which are tangible and that would be experimental results.

Well deserved and overdue promotions within the company are very difficult to get.

Overall, the company does not try hard enough to retain its employees and only seems to care about pleasing the stockholders.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your company is only as good as your employees so you should seriously start thinking about their well-being (even in this economic climate).

    Pros

The ability to see all aspects of a product pipeline from licensing, IP, R&D, bus dev and marketing.

    Cons

Felt like R&D was necessary evil for the business side, but that the value was not understood or leveraged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in R&D. Look to hire the best people, not just the ones you think you will retain.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time

    Pros

You get to work with the sharpest mind on some pretty cutting edge tech.

    Cons

Too many chiefs not enough Indians and they keep laying off the Indians.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire internally. Put policies in that make people feel like its not just a job. Reinstate stock purchase plans. Be more generous to the people that make the big salaries possible. The question shouldn't be ,"will there be layoffs this quarter?" it should be, "how great is it to be here?"
