    Pros

Great, smart & competent people. AB had market dominance & great technologies

    Cons

Over the years & since Hunkapiller left, many executive management including acquisitions have led to the loss of AB's cutting edge. Turned too much into a marketing machine where the quality and customer satisfaction became a smoke screen. This was demonstrated by main competitors such as Illumina to consistently beat LT on its own turf.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Lots of work, some people are very friendly. Most IT folks are *extremely* dedicated (I can't remember the last time I saw so few people do so much with so little). The BioTech side of it is very interesting.

    Cons

IT department seems completely dominated (oppressed?) by marketing. As a result, there is little opportunity to build long-term stability in the IT systems. So everything is very reactive, creating a constant crisis, "hero" mentality, where the most admired and applauded IT resources are not the best at their craft, not those who innovate or inspire, but simply those who work 24/7. Their motto seems to be "Never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it over (or do a Phase 2)"

    Advice to Management

IT needs to invest in architecture, stability, DR/BCP, and risk management. A $4B company without automatic failover will lose revenue from some incident/disaster sooner or later. IT needs to invest in a better culture - it's a horrible place to work, which is not sustainable long-term.
