    I worked at Life Technologies

    Pros

Great working colleagues who are experienced and professional. Learnt a lot from them as they were willing to share their knowledge and experience.

    Cons

Bad office politics which drove the good and experienced folks out. This is prevalent in almost all the different functional areas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the work and effort of the people at the ground and continue to develop their talents and skills.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time

    Pros

Some incredibly talented & bright scientists as peers. Good tools, nice meetings locations. Benefits are OK (private health & pension scheme); salary is OK.

    Cons

After being acquired by Thermo, a lot has changed with little clarity on the direction and vision for the future. It is an highly hierarchical, fixed-structure company, employees are viewed as numbers, HR serve higher management directly but put a show that they serve the employees. Co-workers relationships are on average based on competitiveness & very little empathy. Goes without saying that many managers worry more about their hierarchical position and reputation than anything else and here flattery and looking smart (rather than producing smart) will get you places. Also work-life balance & proper training is close to zero. Workload is, given headcount variation and other factors, unmanageable and you are told to focus and prioritise everything! A funny remark is that many projects are completed as DIY, I mean, there is no guidance, training or support from management yet results are demanded and yes there will be certainly yelling. I also have witnessed lack of respect and rude communications frequently. All in all, it is a quite toxic environment!
