I worked at Lifesouth Community Blood Center part-time (more than a year)

Pros

Flexible hours .
Mid managers and fellow staff members were pleasant to work for/with.
It really is hard to think of 20 positive words to say about Lifesouth community blood center.

Cons

Lots and lots of micromanaging.
The interview process for an menial admin job was well over an hour.
Kind of disgusting how much upper management / executives make considering it's a non-profit.
No room for advancement.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure your top tier pay scales and allocate more of that money to opening new branches and benefiting the people for which blood donation was intended instead of treating it as a money grab for executives.

    Pros

The best reason to work for LifeSouth; is the scheduling. The lab manager is pretty decent in allowing time off on short notice.

    Cons

Annual pay raise is a little skimpy at times but they have been decent in performing cost of living assessments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the work force a bit more.

    Good mission, poor environment

I worked at Lifesouth Community Blood Center full-time

    Pros

The company performs a valuable service for the community, so no matter your actual role you are literally saving lives. Few other jobs can offer you that kind of importance, and due to the medical nature you get exposure to some valuable skills and certifications in the right positions.

    Cons

Because of the kind of work done, mistakes and failure are not tolerated. Training is inadequate at best, and non-existent at worst. The review structure is aggressive and not handled in a manner to promote your growth and improvement. Management philosophy seems to be to grind the employees into the ground, and some middle to senior managers are allowed to run amok without control from the higher levels. Pay and benefits are not competitive, and management seems deaf to any communication from employees be they criticism, complaint, or suggestion. Growth and promotions are not to be found, and in your unlucky enough to be in an on-call roll you'll never find anything approaching a work-life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look at the skills and management style of your mid-tier supervisors - consider actual training in how to manage, lead, and inspire others. Invest in employee training, growth, and promotions. Contribute more to benefits so employees don't see their paychecks vanish to gain coverage for their families. Address chronic short staffing to ensure better coverage and reduce workloads to reasonable expectations
