Pros

Flexible work schedule and the ability to make an impact on a small startup company can keep employees motivated to stay.

Cons

Management oversells what the Livescribe product can do an forecasts sales projections that are too aggressive. This leads to severe cutbacks when things go wrong. On one occasion, 20% of the company was let go, one person in this group had just moved from LA. Another occasion, the CEO asked employees to buy more product to raise the sales figures. Product delays are often due to manufacturing errors or hardware/software design flaws that resulted from poor communication and management.

Advice to Management

The CEO of Livescribe is extremely creative and good at coming up with product ideas, but he is not a business leader. The board should replace him with a seasoned CEO.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Overall concept has merit. Individual contributors are successful. Willingness to try new things. Regular employee communication was always dependable and quick

    Cons

No forward vision of product outside core functionality. No respect for the work and time put in from senior management Politically charged environment.

    Advice to Management

Most were working to hard on attempting to keep their job then actually doing their job. If the people making decisions cared about quality and following the right technical path the company would already be a success which has clearly not happened.

    Pros

+ Management truly cares about making a great product and changing the world + Product may actually change the world + Team has fun and gets some good work done

    Cons

    - Some long nights with last-minute changes and poor planning - Company misses internal deadlines far too often, and sometimes cuts corners to make external deadlines - Too easy to forget process and just get things out the door - Code needs spring cleaning—the constant push to move forward has left a lot of messes - Internal documentation is minimal or nonexistent - Product management seems ineffective sometimes

    Advice to Management

The advantage of a small company over a large company is that a small company can foster great ideas and move on them quickly. Encourage your employees to be active participants and reward them for going above and beyond—don't expect it from them, and remove their incentives for going the extra mile.
