I have been working at Loblaw as a contractor for less than a year

Pros

Tight knit colleagues in the same department promotes excellent teamwork. Workplace diversity creates an interesting environment. Relatively flexible work time and place within limits. No specific technical experience or education required for entry. Traveling opportunities for on-site work create interesting experiences.

Cons

Long but somewhat unreliable work hours. 24/7 on call rotation every few weeks on top of regular office hours means one can have up to 60 hours work week. This will heavily interfere with family life and other activities. Communications and politics between inhouse and outsourced departments have much to be improved and can be frustrating.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on proactive prevention as opposed to reactive short term solution should be increased. Communications between different departments need to be improved. Upper management should encourage more collaboration between divisions and reduce defensive attitude and finger-pointing in problem solving.

Current Employee - Former Grad Colleague in Brampton, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Loblaw full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - learn many integral parts of the business
    - make some great connections with Grads, Loblaw colleagues and Vendor partners
    - reasonably easy and safe learning program

    Cons

    - very slow process
    - very little understanding of what Grads are or what the Grad program hopes to accomplish
    - leads to little respect for Grads, mostly due to lack of education or understanding

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - when putting a Grad into a department, make certain they know the Grads are not students, they are full time colleagues who are there to learn about the functions of that department. Grads are not to be ignored or pushed aside, they have insight from education and experience that could help that Colleague or department

    Cons

Ugly uniforms, hard to maintain relationships with managers because of the large number of employees, hard to memorize all the PLU codes for produce, hard to be able to recognize all the different types of produce.
