Right hand has no clue what the left hand's doing

Development Team Member (Current Employee)
Irvine, CA

Pros- Great people.

- Clean, airy, modern building.

- Beautifully landscaped grounds - lunchtimes are a pleasure in their 'people spaces.'

- Two large kitchens onsite, free coffee and tea, candy & soda machines are only 25c. Free freshly-delivered bagels on Fridays. Occasional catered meetings. Team lunches out.

- Regular visits from lunch trucks.

- $8 onsite hand-car-wash (inside and out!), dry cleaning take-out.

- 15 days 'personal time' (combined holiday & sick time) that can be used as you wish - no more calling in sick when you have just partied a little bit too hard the previous night!

- Lavish offsite company events such as catered Xmas party, Sea World, beach parties etc

Cons- Buyer beware: this company 'throws out the baby with the bathwater.' Local.com seems to have a habit of spending millions on buying promising startup companies (Krillion, Spreebird, Octane) then completely mismanages them, overspends all on the wrong things, decides that these companies are not as profitable as expected, then lays off everyone in a panic to save money, including the original teams that started the companies.

- Layoffs are made without ANY consideration for the clients who are spending their hard-earned money on Local.com's services. Management has NO CLUE WHATSOEVER what the people they are laying off actually do. Large swathes of the Local.com site are frozen, broken, or stuck on the Xmas Day page from 2009. Management neither notice nor care. It's embarrassing at best, and heartbreaking for the teams who have put years of their lives into Local's projects.

- After layoffs, employees left over are expected to handle all the cut people's accounts and projects. Company usually refuses all paid overtime requests; employees are just expected to dig in and "do what they can." I know employees who would frantically work unpaid all weekend just to catch up on the massive amounts of work they are expected to have done in office hours but cannot due to exhaustion and burn out.

- Company will string you along and tell you that your department/ team is about to expand and hire more people 'any day now' for YEARS. All the while telling you 'next quarter, next quarter' when you ask for a pay raise, or when you ask for them to hire more people to help with the massive workload. Managers will not push for you as they are scared for their own jobs.

- Company gives empty promotions that do not (and never will) include a pay raise.

- Company bases your yearly bonus on you achieving a series of 'busywork' and farcical goals that take time away from you doing your actual job. Bonus is not given at Xmas time - when employees really need it - but in February.

- Contractors are not allowed to join in company events and celebrations, despite the fact that there is a large core of contractors who have been there longer than most employees. This creates the uncomfortable situation where a contractor who has worked full time onsite for 4 years has to watch new employees who have been there a week go to the Xmas dinner, while they and their family are excluded. This makes for some very uncomfortable social situations in the workplace.

- Layoff procedure is HORRIBLE. You are given NO advance notice. You will be allowed to come in and start your normal day's work, then you'll be summoned up to HR halfway through the day & told you're being laid off. While you are up in HR, an assistant will go and pack your desk into boxes (including your personal items like your purse, wallet and cellphone), go through your drawers and attempt to sort your things from the company's things, & dump everything into boxes. They then strip you of your security badge, hand you your boxes and escort you off the promises. Your computer password & company email account are frozen on the spot and you are not allowed to go back onto your computer, save any personal documents or even save your day's work. If you have been working there for years this is a massive shock. This procedure makes you feel like a criminal.

Advice to Senior Management1) Develop your products before launching them!! Get one product 100% ready and then launch it, don't go live with 100 half-baked ideas and force your staff to work extra hard for years at a stretch to cope with broken and buggy software.

2) INVEST IN PEOPLE, NOT PRODUCTS. Your staff are your family, your lifeblood, your greatest fans. We are Local.com. Treat us like reasonable people who give a darn about your company and who will work with you in the fact of adversity. Don't treat us like jumpy children who cannot be trusted to know the truth.

3) Include Contractors in company events and company "All Hands" emails. Treating your workers - Contractors or not - who have been there years like outsiders creates a "them and us" culture that further divides your company from the inside out.

4) Revise your layoff policy. Please. It is truly horrible.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
