I have been working at London Business School full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great people to work with across staff, students and faculty.
Challenging environment in which you feel that most people are really keen to to do the best they can.
Incredibly international culture.
Vibrant atmosphere where it always feels like there's something exciting going on.
Can be quite innovative, although this often feels held back either by real practicalities or self-imposed operational bureaucracy.
Beautiful location.
Some fascinating research that actually seems applicable to most people's day-to-day lives.
Very well respected within the international business education community.

Cons

Little staff development.
High staff turnover.
Seems to be little interest in sustainability.
The international business education community is a small place and there is little support to help make sure any skills you develop are transferable into other sectors.

    Pros

    • Beautiful Regents Park close by
    • Many world class academics
    • Staff access to free gym, pool and library
    • Weekly free drinks; good pub attached to premises offering discounts to staff

    Cons

    • Sterile campus and sterile location. Poor catering services.
    • Extremely high staff turnover as good people often quickly leave
    • Staff treated like third class citizens compared to the academics and pay for staff is low
    • Academics dramatically overpaid and act accordingly. Many have little interest in the UK and spend most of their time (and the school's money) travelling business class to the US.
    • Crumbling IT systems
    • Hugely conservative and bureaucratic
    • Severely autocratic and bullying culture across several departments.
    • Some inspiring and forward-thinking managers who have fresh ideas are on the way up - but can only imagine change once the old guard leave (the lifers who have never worked anywhere else), as they are blocking the way
    • Arrogant: feel themselves outside the UK HE system but defensive about not being a US business school
    • Muddled twice-yearly performance reviews for staff. Bizarre new requirement for staff (but not academics) to be rated (pay-linked) according to how their behaviours reflect the institution's vision.
    • Non existent in-house professional development (for staff) and no budget for external training
    • Difficult to recommend

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get into the 21st Century; recognise staff and their abilities and reward properly.

Some senior managers do not practise the new vision of what LBS stands for internally

    Pros

Brilliant organisation if you are studying there

    Cons

Senior management on an operational level are not upright, nor practise entegrity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your middle management staff and not only the bull some senior staff members rally with to the committee.
