I have been working at Longwood University full-time for more than a year

Pros

Great place to work... Very friendly warm environment.

Cons

Salaries are lower that other state institutions in Virginia.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Negotiate your salary at the beginning. It's hard to get people to move to Farmville, so they know they might have to pay more for qualified people.

I worked at Longwood University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good colleagues who understand the importance of higher education is the greatest strength. For the most part, they work together effectively. That, of course, doesn't make faculty meetings fun or interesting.

    Cons

Con is a good word. Some administrators try, too often, to con the faculty instead of leveling with them. The Commonwealth of Virginia (that is, the politicians) try to con everyone by demanding more for less from state colleges and universities, then complaining and blaming others when tuition goes up. Their pandering and hypocrisy is the largest negative about working for a state affiliated university. The only reason faculty turnover isn't greater is too many other states treat their colleges and universities the same way. The ones that don't can skim the cream.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unfortunately, the new president, who arrived with much promise as I was leaving, is seriously ill and has resigned. My advice is to find another who is as good as he never had a chance to be.

I won't bother advising the politicians in Richmond to stop being pandering hypocrites.
