I worked at Loomis Sayles & Company

Pros

Great support and advancement opportunities. The workload not too much and not that many late nights or weekends on average.

Cons

The pay you are given is somewhat below what the industry would consider as standard. The benefits could use some sprucing up also.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would advise increasing health plan coverage and tuition reimbursement. I would also advise giving out better starting pay and raises.

I have been working at Loomis Sayles & Company

    Pros

Horizontal, open structure. Opportunity to learn and be part of a successful investment culture. Its fixed income track record is among the best in the country, and assets under management continue to outpace industry averages. Family oriented and flexible to accomodate needs. Strong benefits package, especially as it promotes a work/life balance, well being, ample time for family obligations, and continuing education. Becoming more quantitative and sophisticated in its investment approach, and the operational and systems infrastructure continues to develop to meet the needs of the investment process. Over time, younger employees may have opportunities to challenge themselves and seek new directions.

    Cons

Poor advancement and career development for existing employees, preferring instead to hire from outside. Some have described culture as cushy and country club; aka, a nice place to work, not as much to offer if you're hungry and eager for something new and innovative. Process oriented. Not well suited for younger employees. The benefits and cultural focus is on spouses, children, and the like, which is a downside only in that it can be alienating for young people. There is also a legacy of promotions not based on merit but on associations and friendships. As a result, many motivated young people jump ship for firms with a merit-based, striving culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement a structure to mentor and train young employees. This can be a great place to work, but it can be alienating at times, and frustrating much of the time.

Great place to build a career in the investment management field

I have been working at Loomis Sayles & Company

    Pros

Loomis has a great culture. The organizational structure is flat and is not burdened by lots of bureaucracy. It is a meritocracy with an entrepreneurial flair. Motivated individuals can standout and stretch their career. There is great growth potential for the business.

    Cons

The quality of management is spotty. There are some exceptionally bright, hardworking individuals that carry a disproportionate amount of the load. On the other hand, there are pockets of weakness in certain mid-level positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The firm needs to strengthen its marketing capabilities and expand its product offerings. There is a heavy reliance on fixed income in terms of assets under management. The challenge will be to grow assets and add depth to the management team while also preserving the company's excellent culture.
