Pros

It beats unemployment. Good benefits package. Hands off managment until they decide not to be and make things diificult and miserable.

Cons

Constant tinkering with mgmt plans and projects. If the last plan was the end all and be all, why are you changing it yet again 6-12 months later? And again, and again. People with zero knowledge of the subject matter making scientific decisions based on faulty knowledge and unrealistic, unfounded criteria. Self evaluations? Really? You don't have the slightest idea how your own people are doing and can't write it down? Forgot about leeway if you need to go to the doctor, pick up your car from shop, etc.

Advice to Management

Keep focusing on quarters and stock price. Things that matter not to people who aren't getting stock options and 6 figure paychecks. Short term will ruin you in the long run. Keep re-inventing wheels that other people and companies figured out and implemented years ago.

    Pros

    even for senior scientists it's pretty much a regular 8-5 work day, good pay; workers are nice to work with

    Cons

    a leadership vacuum in the research area; instead of having a small percentage of bad managers, the vast majority of managers/directors are bad, ranging from control freaks to bullies; managers don't greet or even acknowledge people in the hall ways; the morale is very low, everybody is unhappy

    Advice to Management

    don't think current management in research has a chance to turn it around; distrust and dislike to too deeply ingrained in workers

    Pros

    competitive benefit and compensation package

    Cons

    Again all emphasis is put on numbers with less regard to business judgement. Manager's primary concern is to be the top of the "list" regardless of what market dictates.

    Advice to Management

    There is a great improvement in communication, but listening is the key.
