I have been working at Los Alamos National Laboratory full-time for more than a year

Pros

The lab has excellent benefits and provides a good work/life balance, but their salaries are hardly competitive--particularly if you are a student being converted into a full-time staff member.

Cons

Slow-moving, very behind the curve, extremely political. There is too much focus on hyper-specialization and not enough on being a generalist when it comes to support staff.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about talent.

I have been working at Los Alamos National Laboratory full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

LANL is a government facility so it offers a great learning landscape. It is located in a beautiful area. It is possible to eliminate commuting from your life here. Los Alamos is a small town with a very forward way of thinking. It offers stable employment for professionals.

    Cons

Because it's government work, it is orchestrated by several different agencies so is very frustrating. From a Procurement point of view, the work is very cumbersome and overly detailed. Communication is difficult because the facility encompasses 22 square miles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bechtel needs to stop trying to think of this facility as a "Project". It isn't one. Management needs to stop doing risk avoidance and start doing risk assessment.
