I have been working at Los Angeles USD full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

I spent six years in an urban "high poverty" high school. These kids are academically struggling, but very street-wise. If you have the emotional where-with-all to stay calm in the midst of chaos, you will find the sweetest reward when they finally believe in you and suddenly kick into high gear. I've had supportive parents, principals, and terrific colleagues. The union and benefits are great.

Cons

I was displaced this year to an elite middle school. Love the kids, but some parents are a nightmare and think nothing of trying to ruin you if they don't get what they want. The drastic cuts in education have doubled my workload. The district makes all decisions "Top Down." The pressure of test scores is destructive and relentless. Words fail to express the complexity of this issue.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the scripted curriculum. It destroys the love of learning and teaching. We hear mostly criticism from district administrators on a regular basis and platitudes from the superintendent. Get some "bottom up" decision making going for pity's sake. Teachers should guide reform.
