Pros

In a year round school, you work 4 months..and get 1 and half months off vacation. It is paid, so you won't worry about not paying rent when you're on vacation. You are the boss in the classroom. You can utilize your own imagination and creativity to make your classroom wonderful. You get off at 3pm, when everyone works till 5 or 6pm. You can also work part time as a tutor after work to compensate for the low pay at this district. You also get all the major holidays off, where most companies only give you time off during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Cons

The pressures of test results...and low pay.

LAUSD School Counselors: What Do They Actually Do?

    Pros

The amount of vacation and sick time is extraordinary.

    Cons

There is a lack of vision in what a school counselor can accomplish. Currently, emphasis is placed on scheduling children, supervision on campus, and crisis management rather than on programs to prevent problems or enhance mental health, career exploration, and college awareness. Also, compared to other school districts in Los Angeles area, our salaries are on the low side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow counselors to actual counsel children and promote the three school counseling domains: personal enrichment, career awareness, and academic improvement. We mostly act as disciplinarians and clerks.

    Pros

There is a great work life balance at the District. The retirement pension is great - while it lasts. It's located in the heart of downtown and easily accessible by public transportation.

    Cons

It is disheartening to see that it's not about the kids. The District is fraught with continuous battles and ego trips among all different departments. If you are motivated, hungry, and willing - go to private industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the District and its employees as if it was a business. Work on encouraging open communication amongst internal teams in order to meet the mission statement - educating kids. Get rid of problem employees with many written warnings. Promote and motivate from within instead of continuously hiring consultants.
