Former Employee - Associate Manager
Former Employee - Associate Manager

I worked at Luby's full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Luby's is a great place to learn all aspects of our profession. Junior (assistant managers) will learn cooking from scratch , customer service and all aspects of the industry. Second men (Associate managers) receive quality continuing education from corporate as well as a chance to handle any and all activities that arise.

Cons

Hours particularly in a three men shop can be rough. I have worked more than a few 80+ hour weeks during my tenure. The Company is a times very stressful to work for.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please do not play first and second men against each- other. If you have a policy that you want enforced demand that General Managers buy into it.

    Former Employee - Waitstaff

    I worked at Luby's

    Pros

    Easy to get time off
    Easy to get hired
    Good discount on the food
Equal opportunity for the waitstaff to earn tips
Depending on the store, good opportunity for waitstaff advancement

    Cons

Company turns its back on the bad behavior of its employees
Corporate micro-manages stores and ignores suggestions from anyone below senior management
Corporate makes decisions that directly effect the lower-level employees but gives them no resources to deal with negative feedback
No longer any opportunity for advancement
No apparent vetting process for assistant managers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your waitstaff instead of ignoring positive feedback and calling negative feedback insubordination. Punish employees who engage in disruptive or illegal behavior instead of ignoring it. Bring back the shift leader position as a way for waitstaff to advance into management without having to apply from outside the company. Stop changing meals and programs that customers enjoy. Be more thorough in the vetting process for assistant managers.
