Middle management role is tough

Middle Manager (Current Employee)
Palo Alto, CA

ProsThe hospital attracts and hires top-notch talent. Working in a renowned research facility is great and the atmosphere is intellectually challenging. Salaries are very fair and benefits are excellent.

ConsBut being in a management role at LPCH is hard. Managers are held accountable for improving engagement scores, quality management systems, etc., but there are many processes and procedures that are very time consuming, cumbersome, or just plain don't work. Managers must spend too much of their expensive time trying to get simple things done. There is a big emphasis on process improvement in the clinical areas, but no one is looking at the HR systems, purchasing procedures, etc. -- the smaller things that waste a lot of time.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a look at the non-clinical processes and procedures. A lot of expensive management time is being wasted wrestling with filling out numerous on-line forms to get the simplest thing done.
