Former Employee - Electrical Engineer Co-op III in Houston, TX

I worked at LyondellBasell as an intern for less than a year

Pros

They have a pension plan! Work-life balance.

Some managers will allow you to work 9-80s, which give you every other Friday off as an intern, which is very cool. Otherwise it is a pretty low stress environment, but with a little pressure to succeed in your projects which is important in my opinion

Cons

Have to wear NOMEX chemical resistant clothing in the Houston summer heat, it gets VERY hot under those clothes

Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, doing a great job

I have been working at LyondellBasell full-time

    Pros

Workers are very friendly and normally very willing to go out of their way to help you in any way possible. Excellent system in place for training engineers of industry standards and good engineering practices. Plenty of work to be done. Safety metrics are at all time best. Global collaboration between manufacturing sites is significantly improving with sharing of more ideas / problems-solutions.

    Cons

Management is very reactive and fear based. Senior management levels require "yes-men" reports (there is very little if any two-way dialog). Competitive work environment leads to some stealing of ideas / work for individual recognition by management. Compensation to heavily based on managements recollection of your recent successes in generating profit. Significant amount of expansion work in progress (capital investment $ up) but employee headcount is down. Human resource limited for multiple years creates higher risk of significant reliability events and/or significant safety/process safety events. Operating lean has benefits and can be done successfully as long as you don't try to do to much. Senior management is running lean while trying major expansions, risk burn-out and missing of warning signs that would prevent major negative event.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale remains very low. Advice to management does not result in any action. People get tired (burned out) which results in mistakes being made. Manufacturing is no place for tired workers and certainly no place for mistakes.
