I have been working at LyondellBasell full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Salary and many good people
Good assets
Expansion opportunities, growth potential with good locations
This company has great potential but the arcane, arrogant leadership team will destroy the company.

Cons

Poor Leadership
Don't value people
Don't want input from anyone
They are driving out all the good experienced people because they don't want anyone to point out issues.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

No point - they don't intend to change

I have been working at LyondellBasell full-time

    Pros

The company is doing very well financially, but through cost cutting not growth.

Safety culture is real, not just a slogan.

    Pay isn't bad

Managers do what they can to mitigate moral killing policies from above

    Cons

Company makes a lot of money but the cost cutting is so extreme that more time/money is being spent to save the amount than actually gets saved. Example, wasting hours of a day of well paid people to save a few dollars (literally). It's ridiculous. Causative factor is the emphasis on over the top cost cutting and affects on bonus, though the actual bottom line is harmed by it.

Very little career growth. It could be said that this is a company where your career goes to die. People are very rarely promoted as good positions are usually sourced from outside the company. Growth is also limited so there isn't anywhere to go.

Training has been dismal lately. Probably more cost cutting.

Nobody is proud to work here. They come in for the pay check and that's about it. Stems from feeling like a cog in a machine. Causative factors are lack of true appreciation for the contributions of workers (not just talk) and lack of growth.

Backstabbing, as noted by others, is an epidemic. Nobody is happy working in that kind of hostile environment. Causative factor is bell curve ranking of employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a view that advice isn't listened to. They know what needs to be changed but nothing happens. Prove us wrong.

Increase training, company will benefit from having more diverse skill sets and even if some leave as a result you will be only losing those that aren't fully committed to staying (win/win)

Employees should occasionally be rewarded with special bonuses or stock options during the year, like when a special dividend occurs for shareholders. Lots of hard workers get annoyed when execs and shareholders get a nice extra check and they don't. Doesn't have to be much, just enough to be a "thanks.".

Become more progressive. The company has a reputation as being stodgy with few perks. Perks are cheaper than having to pay high salaries to attract talent. It's not just a gimmick. It works.

Do something huge and inspiring. Get into another line of business that gets people thinking "this is a cool place to work". Become the Google of the Chemical Industry. We have the money, now lets figure out how to be more than a pure commodity play.

Be an employer of choice. That takes far more than just saying you want to be. We want to feel proud to tell our friends and family we work here. Just making a ton of money isn't going to do that. Again, perks and progressive work policies will help.
