Former Employee - Associate Technical Staff in Lexington, MA
Former Employee - Associate Technical Staff in Lexington, MA

I worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

The quality of the work that is available is very high and keeps working challenging and stimulating. The technical proficiency of the coworkers is outstanding. It is easy to find an expert in any relevant field.

Cons

The pay scale is inversely proportional to the quality of the tasks. The pay scales are not in line with the rest of the industry. While technical problems are handled with great skill, personnel problems and management skills leave a lot to be desired.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be a large step in the right direction to have two managers per group that are complimentary. One that can handle technical issues, and one that can handle personnel ones.

Not happy with the culture of the lab

Former Employee - Assistant Staff in Lexington, MA
Former Employee - Assistant Staff in Lexington, MA

I worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Most employees and supervisors are easy to talk to. The lab invests in employees through tuition assistance. It is friendly to people with family, providing flexible hours, health benefits, and vacation days. The lab is investing in emerging areas like bioinformatics and is unlikely to go down.

    Cons

The pay is below average in comparison to tech industry. The lab is bureaucratic. The employee headed social groups are equally bureaucratic and awful. There are little social interactions across the lab. Group cultures differ by a lot. A few supervisors are supportive of the employees, but they are very few. There is a consensus that most group leaders are poor managers. There are service groups that are bad place to be if you are young, intelligent, and driven. Many groups persist old boy school culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the culture. Retain competitive people who are good at managing and in technical skills.
