Current Employee - Postdoctoral Associate in Cambridge, MA

I have been working at MIT full-time (less than a year)

Pros

Highly dynamic position that requires extensive research experience and broad spectrum of knowledge in various fields. Besides the ability to conduct own research, collaborating with other researchers and supervise graduate students are also part of the duties. Relatively relax and flexible work environment.

Cons

Low salary, and relatively low pressure. Everyone in the academia doing their own job, lack of chance to improve inter-person skills.

    Pros

Stability, Low Pressure, High Benefits, Well-Known Organization

    Cons

It's Education. You'll have to change jobs for the promotion you deserve. Unskilled workers can do terrible jobs and not get laid off because they value experience over skillset. "Cushy" jobs can produce "lazy" workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Constantly re-evaluate your current employees and ensure that you're still competitive with what other organizations are offering.

    Frustrating with no upward mobility

I have been working at MIT full-time

    Pros

Interesting work and nice to be part of a World class educational and research institution. Benefits good (pay not as good). Work-life balance ok. Nice overall environment.

    Cons

The VP for Finance office is now almost entirely managed by those with corporate and commercial backgrounds. No one has higher education experience and therefore problems arise in terms of understanding the "business" of education. Policies are made only to then have exceptions depending on who's asking. The worst is that HR actively restrict upward internal mobility. Annual reviews are completely useless because no matter how wonderfully you do, your annual increase will never exceed a particular rate (think below rate of inflation) and there is NO upward mobility. No flex schedule options.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please consider this: why would a talented person want to stay somewhere where they are not properly rewarded for good work, and there is absolutely no reward or room to grow? Also, stop making changes just to do something and then changing it back. Please think before acting.
