I have been working at MITRE

Pros

MITRE has a great work/life balance with respectable co-workers, high standard of education and great pay. If you work in the headquarters locations, there is ample opportunity to find something you're interested in.

Cons

MITRE isn't very well know and they like it like that. The work force trends toward an older population. If you don't work at headquarters location, you often go unnoticed and have less opportunities for varied work.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management does well, but is out of touch with the non-headquarters locations. High level of bureaucracy as MITRE works primarily with the government.

I have been working at MITRE

    Pros

Very bright colleagues, dedication to mission rather than personal or corporate profit, work life balance, important problems with opportunity to help solve them.

    Cons

Too self-satisfied, too many people have inflated view of our stature and reputation in 2011 vs. 1985, resistance to real change at middle level of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assume nothing from first 50 years holds automatically for next 10 (or in many case, more accurately, persuade your direct reports of the opportunities and challenges facing MITRE and our sponsors that are significantly different).
