Current Employee - Senior Systems Engineer in McLean, VA

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Brilliant staff. Work is of National importance. Customers are great.

Cons

Immature and inexperienced senior leaders. Nepotism rampant. Corporate officers only promote people who are like them and that manage up. Little respect or admiration for integrity or diversity. Senior staff treated like disposable components. Officers have no credibility with staff. They say one thing and enact policies that are counter to their statements. Resources in the hands of a few pedagogues. Staff expected to find their own work. The reward is a paycheck.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just prune but cross cut the heavy deadwood. Focus on the visionaries and innovators. Prevent officers hiring their buddies. Look to promote people who aren't white males in their fifties. Run the company like a real business.

I worked at MITRE full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Retirement plan is great even with the recent changes. The rest of the benefits are just average. There are a lot of smart people working at MITRE.

    Cons

No advancement potential for technical staff. No respect for technical staff if they have no desire to be management. If there is an issue between a manager and the technical staff, the manager is always right and there is no recourse for the technical staff. There is no upward review so if a manager dislikes you, they can affect your career without you being able to defend yourself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is very myopic. While you pat yourselves on the back you don't see what the rank-and-file are saying. You need to stop shoveling and start to listen. You've lost a lot of good people over the last five years because of poor decisions and not respecting your technical staff. You better figure out how to stop that hemorrhaging before you lose more of your best people.

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They really do have a great cafeteria. There is a lot for parking your car.
The bathrooms are cleaned twice a day.

    Cons

MITRE tries to maintain the illusion that they are more than an everyday government support contractor. They are resting on their laurels from past years.
The work they do is simply the work they are told to do by the government sponsor. They will do as they are tasked because that is how they can stay in business. They are no less immune to funding cuts than any of the other Lockheeds, Grummans, etc.

The chances for advancement are nil unless you are in the right clique.
