I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

flexibility in work schedule and location. people pretty much respect your schedule and are supportive of work life balance

Cons

there are quite a few people who abuse the flexibility. there is no additional reward for those who work hard. there are disincentives to work hard.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

reward faster for people who push.

    Pro's and con's

I have been working at MITRE

    Pros

Great work life integration, retirement benefits outstanding and educational assistance excellent. Good learning environment depending on where you are in company.

    Cons

Promotions are few and far between, managers don't promote based on merit instead credentials and or favorites and salary increases are less than the cost of living and are distributed as bonuses!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give equal share of promotions to indirect staff as direct staff, determine fair job categories based on expertise not salary ; discourage managers from playing favorites and focus on development of staff. If managers aren't good managers, get rid of them!

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    - MITRE Internal Research and Development Program (MIP)
    - Decent benefits but used to be a lot better (time off and PTO)
    - Ability to grow and create your own opportunities, if in the right group
    - Broad gov't customer base (growing in Healthcare; multi-agency)
    - Smart and highly educated people
    - Trusted and respected advisors to the gov't (in a fair number of cases)
    - Opportunities to make significant difference for this nation

    Cons

    - Pay can be low for junior staff in certain technical fields (i.e. Computer Science) and no mechanism to correct over time; has caused significant turnover in junior staff
    - No real technical growth path, rising requires taking on management responsibility
    - Top heavy on management that have almost no technical focus
    - Most management lack appreciation and knowledge of real technical contributions
    - Working hard does not necessarily equal more reward

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Reward talented individuals more and do what it takes to retain them
    - Learn how to recognize who is making good contributions and who isn't
    - Engage staff more than never (which is how it is now) and become more familiar with the technical aspects of your staff's work without burdening them with massive administrative overhead
    - Create more opportunities to do good technical work that can be followed with reward
    - A re-org cannot fix bad management practices; if you have bad managers a re-org won't fix it
