Pros

Excellent benefits (up to 5 weeks of paid time off per year, top-notch retirement program), great work/life balance, access to state-of-the-art technologies. Very low attrition and layoffs are a very rare occurrence.

Cons

Although most of the company has an excellent technical environment, it's not the same everywhere. Your experience within the company can vary significantly depending on the division you join.

Work at this not-for-profit company is funded exclusively by the US Government. As a result, there are restrictions on how the funds are spent. If you are looking for free lunch every day and beer on Fridays, this is not the place for you.

Advice to Management

Continue to offer good benefits and technical work: it's what keeps most of us here. Continue to engage with employees and seek feedback according to their experience.

I have been working at MITRE

    Pros

Great work life integration, retirement benefits outstanding and educational assistance excellent. Good learning environment depending on where you are in company.

    Cons

Promotions are few and far between, managers don't promote based on merit instead credentials and or favorites and salary increases are less than the cost of living and are distributed as bonuses!

    Advice to Management

Give equal share of promotions to indirect staff as direct staff, determine fair job categories based on expertise not salary ; discourage managers from playing favorites and focus on development of staff. If managers aren't good managers, get rid of them!

    Pros

The work can be intellectually challenging and interesting. The people in most part are good to work with. The work life balance is actually important and is adhered to by company policy and culture. Education and training are considered important, the company will provide significant investments, much more than other companies I have worked for previously.

    Cons

Very much an old boys/gals network, many people have worked at MITRE for more than 20 years, some for more than 30 years. You need to fit in, otherwise you will struggle finding projects. To fit in you have to perform well but not too well, be part of the team, and be careful about making waves. Depending on the project and the task, the work can sometimes be tedious and a boring. Since people have been there for such a long time, MITRE is not a place where you can expect rapid advancement on merit alone.

    Advice to Management

Some promotion decisions, as well as staffing decisions are based on relationships not merit.
