I have been working at MOMS Organic Market full-time (more than an year)

Pros

It's nice to work for a company that sells quality products, supports environmentalism and promotes a holistic well-being. Also, aside from learning about food and organic living I have grown as a person more than I ever expected to grow at a customer service/retail job.

Cons

Labor cuts (despite ample profits) have made it difficult to complete simple tasks, so doing the work two or three people all by yourself is standard protocol.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire ample staff at each store so we don't feel short-handed and can provide customers with the service they deserve.

It all depends on which store you're at . . .

I worked at MOMS Organic Market

    Pros

The hourly wages start higher than most jobs (I started at $11/hr) and the benefits package is available immediately and at a relatively low cost. Their full major medical benefits package is great, though you have to be employed full time for more than a year to be eligible for it. The dress code is very relaxed, as is the work environment, generally. You hear people swearing a lot, in customer-free areas.

    Cons

Staff at the stores are often kept in the dark about happenings and changes to company procedures; it is not uncommon to show up to work one day and have things be different. You are expected to adapt quickly, and the people at MOM's central office in Rockville aren't very helpful if a big problem comes up. The worst problem with this company is their HR department and the way that employee complaints are handled. The HR team at MOM's consists of one person who is very hands-off and tends to encourage talking more than anything else. They don't take complaints relating to bullying and workplace intimidation very seriously at all, and once an employee chooses to file a complaint, the HR department becomes very distant and uncommunicative. Management are poorly trained and often thrown into the deep end immediately; they become overworked pretty quickly and handle it with varying degrees of professionalism. When management really acts up and workers are treated inappropriately, management is often beyond recourse, as the HR department is very little help. Managers are often transferred to other stores with short notice as well, whether they like it or not, which they also handle with varying degrees of professionalism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time training managers and invest in them by not overworking or transferring them to stores that they don't want to work in. Communicate with floor staff in your stores, when things are going to be changed - showing up to work with everything feeling different is jarring and creates a disconnect between employer and worker. Take employee complaints against management seriously - the first time. Hire more people to work in HR, so that issues can receive the attention that they deserve. Do not discourage employees from standing up for themselves - you run 11 grocery stores, so telling someone that makes $11/hr to just lay down and quit is actually pretty cruel and clueless.
