Pros

World class distribution systems. Broad product offering. Excellent e-commerce site. Excellent benefits offering. Pockets of very bright people in various departments. Excellent 401k match. Flawless execution on shipping and customer service.

Cons

Top management mired in indecision. Risk adverse culture in certain areas. Not always on top of innovations in the market-place. Poor technical knowledge of industry with limited training for associates to close the gap.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top management would be well served by understanding that there are innovative ideas that can be obtained if they are open to listening to the voices from outside their inner circle. Top management does not adhere to the standards of the culture required of all others.

    Pros

Fun work environment with a fast pace.
    Decent pay

    Cons

Low potential to advance into upper management positions. Unless you are willing to relocate it is very hard to move into a management position as they are not creating new opportunities. MSC has a habit of not replacing departed employees and just increasing responsibility for cureent management so they do not have to pay another salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better career pathing to employees. Develop training programs to better prepare employees for future roles within the company.

I have been working at MSC Industrial Direct full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits and pay. Superior product offering. Ability to manage pricing to customers. Top of the line electronics to assist in your job.

    Cons

Every day you feel like you have been beaten. The criticism and personal assumptions that they make about you and other associates with only a speck of information is horrible. The open door policy is used as a weapon against you. The have a policy of shooting the messenger and ignoring the message. Everything you say and do can and will be used against you at a later date. They want their managers to keep CIA or FBI type files on all employees (associates). They want you to live, eat and breather MSC. The culture is a CULT! Everything is set up to benefit the company. HR runs the company, hands down. Sales are only a secondary function when in conflict with HR. Too many meetings. Too many conference calls. Too many programs. Too many goals. Too many clicks. Sales commission thresholds are out of control. Expect to make a little commission every other year. Everyone is watching you and taking notes on everything you say and do. If you are willing to go along with everything without offering ideas or challenging conventional thought, you will do well. If you are a forward thingking problem solver, out of the box kind of person, DO NOT get entangled with these people. They will suck the soul right out of you. This was the worst experience of my long career and the biggest carrer mistake that I have ever made. There is no work life balance here, none. They expect you to work at least 9 hours per day then go home and give them an additional 3 or 4 for training and paperwork and email. Absurd.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your arrogance and condesention will ruin you. Stop being closed minded and seeing everything in black and white. The industrial world is full of the gray. HR will eventually destroy this company and run off any good managers or sales people. You have the tools and technology to dominate the industry, stop throwing roadblocks up in front of your people.
