I have been working at MTA - Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Pros

In spite of tough economiy, lay-offs have been limited.

Cons

Too many meaningless reports. Information overload. No one seems to know how to ask only the important questions for strategical reasons. They neeed to understand that asking every questions is too too time consuming and counter productive.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accenture came in and really dealt a blow to the organization. Re-organization was ill-conceived. Nothing seems to work. Cuts made have left the org. out of whack.

    Pros

    Excellent Medical/Health Benefits!
Potential pay is very nice once you are promoted to Full-Time.
Lots of different divisions to work out of. (All of L.A. County)

    Cons

Extremely large company - Sometimes you can get lost in the mix.
Depending on what division you work out of, there can be a bit of drama.
The amount of hours you work (Full-Time) will keep you away from your family. (Ex. 4am-6pm shift) If you have enough seniority to get weekends off, then you will be fine!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to operators in regards to time between time points at specific times of day.
Open up opportunities for advancement to all employees. Part-Time included.

Too much change at the top, each new boss screws up everything previous boss ahs done to show they're "superior"

    Pros

Stable for the staff. There is no advancement but if you want a job in this economy with a 3% raise each year this is the place. Unless you become management then you can expect to be fired within 5 years

    Cons

Its a very political enviornment. The boss is a political appointment and so are all his department heads. Attorneys run everything and think they are all geniuses (they aren't or they'd be in private practice not government). Every new boss spends the first three years telling you why they are better than they last boss and the next two years trying to find a new job or mitigate damage they've caused. Morale and professional decorum are low and relationships are always strained by backbiting, infighting and liasions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote form within and leave people in place when you leave. Forget cronyism, nepotism and racism and just run the system
