I have been working at Macalester College full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

-Because the staff size is small, there is a great variety of interesting opportunities and projects to work on.

-The organizational structure is excellent, there is a lot of 'cross-pollination' between units (ie, few turf wars), and the people with whom I work are professional and fun to be around.

-You can't beat the benefits, the location, and the work hours (8-4:30).

-The College has a very robust financial standing, so there is no worry of layoffs or benefit cuts.

Cons

-You do give up some salary premium to have the benefits, but I feel that they are more than made up for in the quality of life. Plus, there is a tuition benefit for staff children that pays for their tuition at Macalester or other ACTC and ACM institutions.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

-As the other reviewer stated, I would encourage management to look within when promoting.

I worked at Macalester College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Smart, engaged, humble students. Very helpful, competent support staff. Friendly, down-to-earth colleagues. Fantastic facilities (library, gym). Good benefits if you make the right choices and stay long enough to get your money's worth. The Twin Cities is a wonderful place to live: friendly, non-hectic, and affordable -- yet also culturally rich and very cosmopolitan by any (not only Midwestern) standards.

    Cons

A rabidly liberal ideology permeates all goings-on at the college, from the faculty meetings' agenda to the content of the courses. Many of the students think of themselves as liberal social activists in training, and expect their social lives, extracurriculars, and coursework to be in some way connected with this core mission. Unless you are prepared to actively preach liberal values in the classroom and among other faculty, and to have these values preached back at you by colleagues and students at every turn, you may feel marginalized. Also: beware the cold Minnesota winters, and the passive-aggressive interaction style known as "Minnesota nice."

I worked at Macalester College part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fantastic co-workers. Awesome support staff. Pays better than many similar institutions.

    Cons

Transitioning from an idealistic worldview to a corporate worldview. Tenor of the institution suggests one thing then does another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider why you entered this field in the first place. Try to remember when you were young and struggling. Remember that your values, what is good for you, is not necessarily good for your underlings and the institution at large.
