I have been working at Macalester College full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

-Because the staff size is small, there is a great variety of interesting opportunities and projects to work on.

-The organizational structure is excellent, there is a lot of 'cross-pollination' between units (ie, few turf wars), and the people with whom I work are professional and fun to be around.

-You can't beat the benefits, the location, and the work hours (8-4:30).

-The College has a very robust financial standing, so there is no worry of layoffs or benefit cuts.

Cons

-You do give up some salary premium to have the benefits, but I feel that they are more than made up for in the quality of life. Plus, there is a tuition benefit for staff children that pays for their tuition at Macalester or other ACTC and ACM institutions.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

-As the other reviewer stated, I would encourage management to look within when promoting.

I have been working at Macalester College

    Pros

The campus is fairly diverse and international, and very liberal; however, administration and staff could be much more diverse. There are many opportunities for smart and serious students to advance themselves and do great things. The alumni network is impressively strong for such a relatively small college. The indulgent environment is well suited for workers who do not like to work very hard.

    Cons

There is a definite bubble of Mac pride and culture surrounding the campus. If you buy in, you'll love it. If you don't, be prepared to feel like an outsider. Student service staff could be much more professional and student-oriented. Many take advantage of the complete lack of oversight and accountability. The result is that current students aren't getting the services they are entitled to and which they pay a tremendous amount of tuition each year to receive. In my experience, constant "team" formation and mentality means that staff are far less productive, and not at all intent on minimizing the gap between their potential and actual performance. Those with a strong work ethic will be constantly frustrated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Act ethically and professionally and those around you will follow. Hold accountable those who come in late, often "work" from home, take far too many last-minute days and half days off for flimsy personal reasons, submit untruthful time reports to HR, collect pay they did not earn, and do not provide quality services to students.
