I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time

Pros

- Mostly merit-based, ability to take ownership and influence direction
- Opportunities to advance and change roles still exist.
- Get exposure to a wide range of technology
- Flexibility in work hours
- 24x7 resource centres in Manila/Gurgaon (for MOT/ITG) now handle most support work, so less oncall/weekend work than there has been in the past.
- Although a number of people have left, there is still a number of great people across MOT/ITG in the regions.

Cons

- Continued focus on low-cost resource centres (Manila/Gurgaon) and outsourcing within MOT/ITG, has led to a number of redundancies in Sydney and the other regions, affecting general morale.
- Continued cost-saving focus has mostly put a stop to the pre-GFC "work hard, party hard" culture.
- Loss of efficiency and inability to get things done because of loss of skilled staff.
- Freezes on pay-rises in recent years has affected overall remuneration.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There seems to be quite a disconnect between MOT/ITG management and the actual people doing the work. Need to get back to basics and recognise that the resource centre strategy combined with outsourcing will lead to significant loss of quality and efficiency - impacting MOT/ITG's ability to react to business needs in the future.

    I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - flexible working arrangements, can work from home
    - some people in the team are switched on

    Cons

    - long hours
    - out dated technologies
    - senior management is reactive, poor short term decisions made that are of no benefit in the future
    - often have to manage upwards

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - younger IT staff should be promoted upwards more quickly to bring new ideas
    - some senior management who've stayed at teh company for too long i.e. 10 years + stifle innovation
    - management need be more proactive and innovative about their IT strategy, costs are unnecessarily being incurrred from high TCO's with over-engineered solutions, vendor lock ins and generally poor short term and reactive decisions.
