I worked at Macquarie Group

Pros

- relaxing in general
- flexable hours
- decent pay for grads

Cons

- grad roles may not offer good(steep) learning curve and knowledge/skills that are useful for the future. Basically try to avoid operation based roles

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Collagues are very smart, dedicated and social people. We mostly tried to pull together as a team.
Working environment on the trading floor was challenging but very stimulating.
I learnt a lot there about trading systems, risk systems and trading in general.
Total compensation was competitive, at least at the time.

    Cons

Management is quite clueless about making life easier for the developers, who put in very long hours (without much recognition) in order to fix recurrent problems that could be permanently dealt with.
The say yes to business too often, however unrealistic the business request is.
They also have no vision about how to evolve the trading/risk system and how to grow the team sustainably.
The lack of communication between management and employees about key initiatives or even people who have just been fired and left the office is surprising, worse than other places in the city of London.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to nurture your team and plan ahead in terms of development.
Learn to communicate with the team properly - you are a big company and a big department now, not a tiny operation.

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great training, thought heavily focused on solely modelling
Some great employees who were willing to take the time to train analysts

    Cons

    Inability to move between teams
Lack of support from buddies / mentors
Lack of management involvement in juniors
Inability to forecast market movements (massively overhired in 2008 only to cull half the graduate year)
Poor senior management. Announced redundancies between regions in waves and in doing so created panic and a severe drop in staff motivation

    Disapproves of CEO
