I have been working at Macy's

Pros

Excellent sales training (MAGIC) that can be used for any job involving customer service
Stores are now using MySchedulePlus which gives flexibility. You can pickup, swap, giveaway assigned shifts all between employees without manager approval.
Good register training, but most occurs through coworkers
20% employee discount increases to 30% for select sale days, plus allows use of coupons

Cons

Too focused on sales goals, credit card applications, and employee scorecards.
Low wages compared to skills expected, pay increases never more than $0.25.
Sales goals encourage competition between employees with the customer in the middle.
Almost no advancement opportunity except for "promotion" to full time or commissioned associate.
No commission except for select departments; commissioned departments have low commission 1% or less. Some commissioned departments have monthly draw where employee technically owes Macy's money before they can accumulate commission.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward and acknowledge employees who provide MAGIC customer service, the employees who are the reason customers return. Don't reward employees who hog registers for sales, reward departments who actually move large amounts of merchandise. An expert register ringer is the not the same as an expert salesperson.
Commission every associate in the store, even a low 0.5% commission, to promote associate sales.
Drop the individual sales goal and focus on department sales so employees work with each other instead of against one another.

A splintered, stove-piped organization that can actually get things done.

I have been working at Macy's

    Pros

Very good and knowledgeable people...Good working envronment if you are in the right management pyramid.

    Cons

Too many reorganizations....too many bosses who have differing standards on what is "Acceptable" performance. No tele-commuting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set standards for perfomance expectations that are consistent across the company...and not differing from manager to manager. Allow tele-commuting. Improve your benefits package to your employees. They deserve better.

I have been working at Macy's

    Pros

Great management for the most part, clothes are wonderful and being a Specialist gives you some extra incentives such as bonuses and gratis (free merchandise).

    Cons

Responsible for opening new store accounts (credit cards) and much of your goals arfe based around that. You might as well be working at a bank because you are required to open 4 per week for full timers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through with what you say you're going to do. Often times things are said by team leaders, and then there is no dedication behind it.
