I have been working at Macy's full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary and Paid-Time-Off. In comparison to other department stores, Macy's can be very competitive with salary. New managers start off with 3 weeks of PTO.

Stability - Once you're in, you're in. It can be easy to "breeze through" your job and stay in the same job title for years. If you have excellent communication and social skills and you network across your district and other stores, you can excel pretty easily. Be prepared to be mobile within a geographical region (i.e. Chicagoland) for more advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Retail Schedule - You sacrifice any stability
Holidays - Say "Bon voyage" to Thanksgiving and Christmas. You're better off rescheduling these holidays than trying to get around it. If you take a job in retail, this is a given and you should be prepared for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer as much work-life balance as you can despite the retail/holiday hours. More weekends off, two days in a row off, etc. will go a long way. We know it's retail; we know the demands of the business, so we appreciate every inch you can give.

I have been working at Macy's full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The company prides itself on coaching their associates to become better performers, monitor their success, drive sales and application goals, and develop their Executives to the fullest capability. The company brings out the kind of tenacity in people they never knew they had which in turn benefits you in both your professional and private life. It is stressful, but if you stay away from the gossip and look at the bigger picture and maintain your priorities, success in inevitable. Plus there are so many opportunities for advancement its ridiculous! They bring out that competitive spirit and make you a better leader overall.

    Cons

There are too many managers wanting to be bosses. You will have one designated supervisor, but the other managers want to supervise you too and telling you different things to do, say, and act. Stay strong, don't tell all of your business because if they feel you are a threat they will use it against you later.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a backbone and keep it. Stay away from gossip and he-say she-say. If an issue is brought to your attention, take it to the source in a professional, non-accussational manner, and hear their side of the story. There may be a plausible explanation for the situation. Reward your associates on a constant basis. Don't just come to them when the do something wrong, acknowledge often when they do good because they want to please you and keep their jobs. If they feel they have to be defensive when you come around, that makes them not want to be around you. Be very self aware, have active listening skills, and look for ways and employ those ways of promoting a safe and healthy working environment.
