I worked at Macy's part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Macy's has decent discounts for employees which can be GREAT during sales. Co-workers are mostly friendly as long as you aren't competing for sales. Customers are friendly and mostly understanding and patient.

    Cons

Managers often place themselves in "golden towers" rather than working as team leaders. They lose sight of what real customer service is when they get too wrapped up in playing their "loyalty" game aka acquiring new Macy's Rewards card accounts. That is literally their main goal/sole focus - not the merchandise, not the customer satisfaction, not a quality shopping experience. The competition of acquiring new credit accounts turns employees against each other. Retail clothing sales and credit card sales should be two different things. Give the focus back to why the customer is actually there. I also saw several decent associates treated poorly if not totally overlooked by management - that is when management is actually available. They seem absent more often than not on the sales floor. I spent a good deal of time tracking them down amongst three floors when they didn't respond to phone pages. More often than not, it was the assistant managers that did a better job of handling business. Also, training - their lack of proper training before sending sales associates out on the floor is totally self sabotaging. Nothing like learning on the fly during the holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a better way to motivate employees and lose the loyalty game playing. More focus on the products and a positive work environment.

I have been working at Macy's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's a big name and everyone knows Macy's; it's such a traditional, household name.

    Cons

Very political toxic environment, people are very quick to throw everyone else under the bus about anything and everything, cut throat race to the top in a non-supportive environment, no sense of leadership or building a personal brand - just the modeled behavior of fending for yourself and hoping Management likes you enough to promote you

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Macy's Corporate is huge so it's easy to feel small - but with less structure changes and more organization as a Division and as a company would honestly help ease the frustration and confusion that happens every couple of months there's a dramatic structural change. Understand there are some very positive company-wide initiatives that will help Macy's as a whole but on a smaller scale it feels like nothing is ever settled or permanent.
