Fun and Challenging

Former Employee - Sales Manager in San Jose, CA
Former Employee - Sales Manager in San Jose, CA

I worked at Macy's full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Great co-workers, staff, and managers. I enjoyed my job and looked forward to working most days. I had great managers that gave feedback and wanted to help me grow.

Cons

Schedules where a little difficult as they where unpredictable. Long hours and six day work weeks during holiday hours. The eic phone was the worst. Essentially you where the manager on the floor and in my experience was hard in such a big store.

Advice to Management

Having a similar schedule that is offered to the associates work for the managers as well.?

    Pros

Salary and Paid-Time-Off. In comparison to other department stores, Macy's can be very competitive with salary. New managers start off with 3 weeks of PTO.

Stability - Once you're in, you're in. It can be easy to "breeze through" your job and stay in the same job title for years. If you have excellent communication and social skills and you network across your district and other stores, you can excel pretty easily. Be prepared to be mobile within a geographical region (i.e. Chicagoland) for more advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Retail Schedule - You sacrifice any stability
Holidays - Say "Bon voyage" to Thanksgiving and Christmas. You're better off rescheduling these holidays than trying to get around it. If you take a job in retail, this is a given and you should be prepared for it.

    Advice to Management

Offer as much work-life balance as you can despite the retail/holiday hours. More weekends off, two days in a row off, etc. will go a long way. We know it's retail; we know the demands of the business, so we appreciate every inch you can give.

    Pros

    20% Discount
Macy Money- (it's earned when you go beyond your daily sales goal)
1 hour (unpaid) lunch break! (the best in retail- everywhere else is 30 min) + 20 min. payed.
Meet lots of great people : made friends. Most of the customers are nice.
Can be 'moved' around to another section of Macy's if desired
Very Flexible with Scheduling, people can even work as On-Call (shows flexibility)
Can check Schedule Online : Instead of Calling

    Cons

Pressure to sell + open credit cards
Holidays/Big Sale Days : Very Hectic : Very Messy! : Standing-up all day!
People leave messes all over the store/your work area
Be prepared to deal with the biggest customers whiners ever! : People will scream over coupons!
    Fakeness of managers
    Favoritism
Not enough hours : due to over-hiring : every week there are new people (its a huge store)
Store managers screaming at employees because its a slow day? :NO!

    Advice to Management

Macy's is a great company but you need to re-evaluate some of your managers!
and for Macy's East a Store manager should not scream at the employees!
