Former Employee - Retail Sales Associate in Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Macy's part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Macy's offers decent pay for a part-time retail job, clothing discounts and ability to transfer stores if need be. I've known people to move up to corporate after working part-time for a store for a few years.

Cons

Turnover is quite common, there are a lot of season employees and hours can often be hard to come by if you are looking to work closer to full time you often have to negotiate with your co-workers. If you manage to get on a good team where everyone does equally good work, you are lucky, but if you have a bad egg who just sits at the register to ring up sales and meet goals, don't expect management to help much.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your staff as if they aren't disposable and you might get better sales and results.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Inspires their employees to bring forward their ideas. Great opportunities of advancements. The ability of switching departments for promotions.

    Cons

Pay could be better and a nice bonus would've been great. I wish I would've never left NY and stayed with the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the work with giving your employees the openness to bring their ideas forward and striving for the best.

Macy's work environment is toxic...it was a great place to work before Macy's bought out the May Co Stores...

I have been working at Macy's full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    discount
some of the employees were nice to work with

    Cons

Experienced Area Sales Managers and Sales associates with more than 5 years have been systematically fired or forced out because they want all the employees to be cheap labor. The replacement Area Sales Managers are not given training and treated terribly, and you know what they say, it rolls down hill. The newer sales managers treat employees disrespectfully and like 5 year olds; berating you in front of customers and coworkers. The whole atmosphere in the store I was in (for 9 1/2 years) is toxic. NO ONE is happy in that store. They keep cutting hours, and expect more than one person can possibly do. Sales and customer service are the most important and that is how you are judged. I have no problem with that...but when you keep cutting hours and there is only one person in an area, it is almost impossible to give quality service to your customers, especially if you are in an area that only specific persons can work. Training is very poor. And Area mangers are stretched thin, so if you call for assistance, they don't want to help you. If you force them to come help, they are really nasty to you for interrupting them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your people better. Treat employees with respect and not like children. Add more hours, cutting them to the bone does NOT help your margins if customers leave because they can't wait or can't find help. TRAIN YOUR ASM's... and don't treat them bad because they treat their associates badly because that is what they learn from upper management.
