I worked at Macy's full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Pay was fair if you didn't have to work 24/7

    Cons

Training was lacking. Does not have any interest in outside knowledge from successful companies. Very closed minded. Prefers to hire within and treat anyone from outside with disrespect. Hours were 24/7 and always wanted one more thing. Very archaic systems within stores. One Christmas , had a corporate visitors who demeaned team and store while they should have been out thanking team and associates for their hard work throughout the season. No appreciation or respect for others.

Listen to your people. Ask for thoughts of your associates, you may find some very helpful suggestions.

I have been working at Macy's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees are able to help request schedule preferences
    via online scheduling system.

    Cons

Coaching only to limited information (score card) numbers each week is very negative.and allows no discussion of what the manager may have observed during the past week that was a positive. Numbers are only a piece of the whole picture. As an experienced manager and coach I believe that they need to take a more holistic approach to the feedback process. Employee morale is very low in the store that I work in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tell your employees what you see in their work as a positive in addition to just berating them over scorecard numbers over which they have only some control (they can't make people open another credit card or attain unrealistic sales goals every day in a poor economy). Ask rather are they doing everything humanly possible to attain those goals? What strides do you see the employee making to improve their sales and loyalty numbers? Coach to that as well. A little more positive could go a very long way.
