I worked at Macy's part-time for less than a year

Pros

Lots of available shifts and opportunities for things like Macy's money. The company tries ts best to keep employees happy. The dress code is actually pretty lax and open for self-expression and personal style. There are opportunities in this company, you just have to be willing to stick it out and sometimes smile through certain bad situations.

Cons

Sales are competitive, especially in cosmetics and fragrances. Veteran Sales associates can get territorial about sales and commissions or "spiffs". You're just kind of dropped in on your first day and expected to make the best of it, even when you have no idea about any of the products you're supposed to be selling. Also, pushing the Macy's card constantly is tedious and 99% of the time unsuccessful. Daily goals seem important at first but quickly you learn that they really aren't that focused on goals but how many star reward accounts you open.

I have been working at Macy's full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Potential to move quickly, lots of growth potential. Get to interact with so many different people and personalities on a daily basis. Never gets boring or mundane.

    Cons

Poor communication, some expectations not clearly articulated. You completely own your learning curve, which can be beneficial sometimes, but it mostly creates a more stressful workplace due to high-pressure situations that you encounter without anyone preparing you for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For upper management: if you expect your direct reports to treat their direct reports with cordiality, respect, over-exaggerated recognition and positivity, and entrust them as skilled individuals to get their job done, then you should hold yourselves to the same expectations instead of being exempt from any company directives with respect to management tactics and team engagement.
