I worked at Macy's full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Wonderful Company. Dedicated to the community. Lives up to the reputation of a world-class store. Places customers at the center of every decision.

Cons

Upper management not always forthcoming. Keeps vital information under wraps for fear it will cause workers to panic. Employees work in a culture of constant fear - even the most productive members are shunned because they don't "fit in."

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Execs: Pay closer attention to your juniors. If you don't feel open, honest communication, take the time to investigate, there may be a reason.

I worked at Macy's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You're getting paid, traditional retail work, 20% off employee discount (though you must have a Macys card) on top of coupons, Possibly good for a first job, but get out as soon as you can.

    Cons

Managers will talk down to you, you'll get paid minimum, I got a 10 cent raise after being there for a year and that was the "good raise", you'll frequently work alone even on busy days, managers will refuse to give you specific days off no matter how far in advance you request it off, scolded constantly for not getting credit cards, insane sales goals even on slow nights which then punish the employee, the emphasis on sales goals/credit breeds backstabbing in coworkers even though managers preach team work

Pleasant enough but can be highly competitive.

I worked at Macy's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Lots of available shifts and opportunities for things like Macy's money. The company tries ts best to keep employees happy. The dress code is actually pretty lax and open for self-expression and personal style. There are opportunities in this company, you just have to be willing to stick it out and sometimes smile through certain bad situations.

    Cons

Sales are competitive, especially in cosmetics and fragrances. Veteran Sales associates can get territorial about sales and commissions or "spiffs". You're just kind of dropped in on your first day and expected to make the best of it, even when you have no idea about any of the products you're supposed to be selling. Also, pushing the Macy's card constantly is tedious and 99% of the time unsuccessful. Daily goals seem important at first but quickly you learn that they really aren't that focused on goals but how many star reward accounts you open.
