I have been working at Macy's part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

-Great discount. If you are a shopper, this is the place to be. 20-30% off of every purchase everyday and that's in addition to using coupons and Macy money. As an employee, there is no reason to ever pay more than 50% for anything.

-Really flexible schedule. With the new MSP system, you pretty much decide when you want to work. Unless it's a key day like a One Day Sale or Black Friday (which will be locked in the system) you are free to drop shifts, pick up shifts, swap shifts with your co-workers and schedule your own vacation without a manager's approval

    Cons

-Low pay. You will start at $8 an hour no matter how many years of retail experience you have. Raises are hard to get as you have to meet ridiculous goals for sales and credit applications to get them and the max you get is 55 cents a year.

-Management has unrealistic expectations most of the time, especially when it comes to credit. A lot of the younger managers are trainees fresh from college who have no prior retail experience and have no idea what's going on. They have no more business running the store than the other 20-somethings who are working as associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes we are in business to make sales and open credit cards, however as a manager, your job is to actually manage your team. If you know better ways to increase sales, share it with your team and throw in some positive feedback now and then. Associates are well aware when they fall short of sales goals, but acknowledge us when we meet them or go above and beyond.

    I have been working at Macy's part-time

    Pros

Depending on location, the staff is nice and good, though the conundrums of sales may bring up a few problems. As long as you keep your mind focused on helping the customer, it is not a bad experience.

    Cons

Gets very hectic, and depending on department, customers go by a bit too fast to get a meaningful, repeat sales relationship going. Need to have one year with Macy's to go anywhere.
