I worked at Magellan Health

Pros

Colleagues care about providing quality services. Benefits package, including time off better then many other local companies. Commitment made to creating positive work environment.

Cons

Downside-recent changes leave staff feeling overworked and stretched thin. Not enough employees to continue to be able to provide high level of customer service.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to ask employees for ideas and feedback. Try to understand which programs aren't working and why-and accomplish this as quickly ad possible.

Typical corporate mentality, they talk a good game but short on delivery.

I have been working at Magellan Health

    Pros

Work/life balance was the biggest advantage. They try hard to make a positive difference but tend to over promise and under deliver. The senior management really seems to care about their employees; now if they could only get this caring spirit to carry through to the mid level management.

    Cons

Constant reorganization and restructuring. Their flexible scheduling is counter balanced with an ever expanding work load. They offer many learning programs but they tend to be centered on basic/ general business skills (eg. effective communication, managing stress, valuing diversity, etc.) while learning job roles, functions and skills tends to be a helter skelter crash course in on-the-job training. If you are fortunate to have a good work associate to help you learn your job, then you are lucky.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need less Vice-Presidents and more compentent middle management. They need to really develop a strong job skills training programs. While Senior management really seems to care and listen to lower levels; unfortunately this does not seem to carry beyond the Senior level. The company could really benefit from listening to the needs of all levels of the corporate structure. Most of their Director level management seems to be too over-worked to have time to listen or provide useful direction to the corporate levels below. In summary they have good daily operation level employees and Senior Management, unfortunately their is a significant breakdown in communication between the two groups. Senior Management tries to do a good job of communicating downward, unfortunately the feedback loop is broken. The company has great potential but will have difficulties in realizing it until they really learn to listen (not just hear) the rank and file.
